In the 1990s, while touring and producing recording sessions, I decided it was finally time to learn guitar. Like every instrument I have ever tried to understand, I learned it the only way that felt natural to me. By writing songs. Overcome took shape during that period, while I was living with my girlfriend at the time, Rebecca.
When the song felt ready, I went into the studio with a close friend who helped bring it to life, and we recorded it together. Rebecca was part of the process from the beginning. She listened closely, offered honest feedback, and helped shape the emotional direction of the song. Even then, it carried themes of longing and absence, before either of us truly knew what those feelings would come to represent.
Years later, after our relationship had ended but our connection remained, I had moved to Europe when I received an email that changed everything. Rebecca had passed away suddenly. She was the first person I ever lived with, and the loss was deeply unsettling.
Afterward, I spoke with her mother. She asked me two things. One was whether I would accept some of Rebecca’s ashes, as she wished to be cremated. I later released them into the Danube River, only then realizing how closely her Hungarian roots connected to the country I had ended up calling home. Her mother also asked if my song could be played at Rebecca’s eulogy. I remembered that years earlier I had played it for her parents during a visit. I agreed without hesitation.
Since then, the song has carried all of that history with it.
Now felt like the right time to finally release it.
